Rep. Burgess Owens, who represents Utah’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform to comment on ongoing political developments and local achievements in October 2025.
On October 9, Owens criticized Democratic leadership during the federal government shutdown, posting: “While Chuck Schumer says ‘every day gets better for us’ during the Democrat Shutdown, here’s the truth:
70% oppose the government shutdown
65% say Democrats should accept Republicans’ clean, nonpartisan continuing resolution
https://t.co/wt5WFbt6AF“. The tweet referenced polling numbers about public opposition to the shutdown and support for a Republican-backed measure.
The following day, Owens recognized academic achievement among Utah students by writing: “Congratulations to Utah’s 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars, Blake Ryan Hullinger, Jacob Glen Jenkins, Meleani A. Tukuafu, and Denver Marie Whaley!
These students represent the very best of our state, and we’re proud of them for earning this incredible accomplishment.” This post highlighted four students from Utah honored as U.S. Presidential Scholars.
Later on October 10, Owens returned to the topic of the government shutdown with another post: “It’s Day 10 of the Democrat Shutdown because the same Democrats who once called shutdowns ‘dangerous’ and ‘disastrous’ now refuse to pass a clean, non-partisan CR they supported 13 times under the Biden administration. https://t.co/Iy8eYFCWPA”.
Owens has represented Utah’s 4th District since replacing Ben McAdams in 2021. He was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1951 and currently resides in Salt Lake City. Before his congressional service he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Miami in 1974.
