Rep. Burgess Owens, a U.S. Congressman representing Utah’s 4th district since 2021, used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and recent international developments in early October 2025.
On October 8, Owens criticized the impact of the government shutdown on food assistance programs, stating, “The Democrat Shutdown put food assistance for mothers and children at risk, including 46,000 Utahns. Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, WIC funding will continue, but this NEVER should’ve happened. Senate Democrats: pass the clean CR and re-open the government.”
A day later, on October 9, Owens addressed foreign policy developments in the Middle East following a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas. He wrote, “President @realDonaldTrump’s Peace through Strength leadership continues to earn respect around the world, and this historic peace deal between Israel and Hamas proves it. We pray for the release of every hostage and for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.”
Later that same day, Owens commented again on the effects of the government shutdown on federal employees: “It’s Day 9 of the Democrat Shutdown, and Chuck Schumer says ‘every day gets better for us.’ Tell that to the active-duty troops, law enforcement officers, air traffic controllers, and federal workers about to miss a paycheck.”
Burgess Owens has served as a member of Congress since defeating Ben McAdams in 2021. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1951 and currently residing in Salt Lake City, Owens graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974.
