Blair Barfuss Appointed Chief Of Police In Riverton
Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs has appointed Blair Barfuss as chief of police in Riverton. The appointment became official on Tuesday, February 21, following ratification of the mayor’s appointment by the Riverton City Council.
“Chief Barfuss will come to Riverton with a wealth of law enforcement experience,” said Staggs. “His servant leadership style and commitment to community-oriented policing make him an ideal person to lead the Riverton Police Department.”
Barfuss comes to Riverton after serving as chief of police most recently at Utah State University and previously as chief of police and director of public safety at Utah Tech University. He spent the majority of his career in law enforcement with the West Valley Police Department where he held a variety of leadership roles, including training unit commander, patrol watch commander, detective sergeant, administrative sergeant, patrol sergeant and SWAT team leader. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds a master’s degree in human resources from Utah State University and a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in criminal justice administration.
Barfuss has been recognized for his leadership in law enforcement. In 2022, he received the Medal of Excellence from the National Association of Campus Security Administrations. In 2021, he was named Chief of the Year (Small Agency) by the Utah Chiefs of Police Association and the Chief of the Year by the Utah Fraternal Order of Police.
“It is an honor to be selected to lead the Riverton Police Department,” said Chief Barfuss. “I look forward to serving the residents of Riverton and ensuring the Riverton Police Department’s commitment to service and community continues.”
Barfuss took the helm of the Riverton Police Department following the ratification of his appointment on February 21 and his subsequent swearing-in. He will lead a team of 36 sworn officers and four civilian staff. The department was established on July 1, 2019, when it took over law enforcement duties in Riverton from Unified Police Department.
