Podcast: Utah’s Professional Licensure Reform

This episode features a conversation with Margaret Busse, executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce, Jeff Shumway, the new director of the Office of Professional Licensure Review, and Pete Codella, Go Utah’s managing director of business services.

Utah’s leading the way in professional licensure reform. Recently, Gov. Cox signed S.B. 16, which created the Office of Professional Licensure Review, to reduce unnecessary barriers to workforce development in Utah.

Margaret Busse explains her keen interest in public policy issues and her career path, how the department is reducing regulatory barriers for businesses and individuals, and the office’s role in managing professional licenses in Utah, where over 700,000 workers are required to have a professional license. She also discusses licensing requirements in the state, the goal of licensing reform, and how she views Utah licensure reform moving forward.

Shumway details his career path to become the director of the new Office of Professional Licensure and review within the Utah Department of Commerce, the social impacts state government can have, and the primary objective of the office he oversees. He shares lessons learned in his early tenure, the licensing reviews he hopes will lead to meaningful changes in the state, and how professional licensing review in Utah compares to other states.
